Suiattle Rafting Trip

One the last day of July, 2016, Dan and his friend Mike took me rafting on the Suiattle river near Darrington.

Dan was really happy because the rafting company that was camped out at our put in place had a great pump that they let us use. It helped him fill the raft with air in a few quick minutes.

Dan takes a picture of me with my camera. He had no idea how unlikely it was that I was actually going to put on that life vest. Note the knife. I was nervous enough that I didn't even see it when I first it on.

This was a beautiful river. Dan pointed out several times that it was relatively unspoiled, with lots of wood on it. That's not particularly visible here, but you can see how pretty the forest was along the shore.

Here's some wood by the river, but we actually hit some big log jams in places. Navigable log jams, but still a lot of wood.

At the take out on the Sauk

Very shortly after the Suiattle joined the Sauk we took the boat out. I was hung out at the Sauk while Dan and Mike, who were driving, went back to the car at the put in place on the Suiattle. I took some miscellaneous pictures while waiting, which are shown below.

Dan's pictures from the Trip

Don't forget to click on them to make them larger. The software I'm using to put this together wasn't very kind to Dan's pictures. If you click on them, then they expand and the blurriness goes away.

Incredibly, Dan let me row for a bit.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3bucket01.elvenware.com/suiattle/suiattle-2016-07/IMG_4735-small.jpg

I only ran into one large rock.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3bucket01.elvenware.com/suiattle/suiattle-2016-07/IMG_4736-small.jpg

At the time I ran into the rock, there was about fifty yards of open water on the left of the rock, and fifty yards of open water on the right. I'm still not sure how I managed to hit the rock.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3bucket01.elvenware.com/suiattle/suiattle-2016-07/IMG_4741-small.jpg

Fortunately, the boat survived, and Dan even let me keep paddling downstream for a few more minutes.

Note the look on my face: I'm starting to think I know what I'm doing. Just skilled enough to be really dangerous....
